DAVID DANNER (1844–1950)
Trade Sign for Woodcarving
and Pen Drawing
Canal Fulton, Ohio
1909
Walnut, tinned iron, glass, brass screws, original paint
H 11 x W 17 x D 6 3⁄4, inches.
Paper medallion under glass inscribed in ink: “Wood Carving/ and / Pen Drawing/ By David Danner / Canal Fulton, Ohio / 1909.”
Accompanied by a calligraphic drawing of a girl holding a cat with American eagle, flags Ink & watercolor on paper
14 1⁄2 x 11 inches
Inscribed: “Sep / the 8th / 1866 / By D. Danner / Practical and Ornamental penmanship / Canal Fulton. Sep. 8th 1866 / Prominent / PENMANSHIP”
In this newly discovered trade sign for David Danner, a three-dimensionally carved hand holds an ink pen that dramatically extends beyond the parameters of the oval plaque. Below this demonstration of skill, a laurel wreath holds a circular glazed aperture with calligraphic inscription describing Danner’s occupations. This trade sign is clever in its self-referential formula in advertising both woodcarving and pen drawing the artist demonstrates his abilities in both mediums within one sign. The hand and pen are finely carved bringing to life the calligraphic abilities mentioned in the ink-on-paper medallion. It’s near perfect and un-weathered condition indicates that it was used for display indoors, likely in the studio of the maker.
David Danner, Jr. (1844-1950) was born to farmer David Danner, Sr. (1808-1877) and Mary Young (1813-1899) of Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio, and married Nancy Lentz (1849-1910) also of Stark County. He is described in the 1904 genealogical survey, Old Landmarks of Stark County, Ohio as an agriculturalist and generous supporter of Canal Fulton’s Presbyterian Church. A possible clue alluding to his artistic talent is an excerpt describing Danner’s home improvements described in John Danner, Old Landmarks of Stark County, Ohio, (Logansport, IN, 1904), p. 1117: “His beautiful and attractive rural home contains all the comforts and conveniences calculated to make country life desirable, and he has spared no reasonable sacrifice in improving his place and bringing it to the successful state of cultivation for which he has long been noted.” Additionally, census data lists his occupation as farmer up to the 1910 report, in which his occupation is listed as “odd jobs.” This change appears to coincide with the dating of the trade sign, and the possible need to advertise his abilities for hire. An additional drawing by Danner is owned by a descendant of the artist’s cousin for whom it was made.
